A Day to remember!

It was a day to remember for the Rotary Club of Seaford and for their guests - children from Belarus. The day was part of the President?s Project to support the Charity - Friends of Chernobyl?s Children.

Friends of Chernobyl?s Children was founded in 1995 to support children from Belarus, much of which was devastated by radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Although Chernobyl is located in the Ukraine some 20 miles south of the border with Belarus, children who weren?t even born in the 1980s are developing leukaemia, thyroid cancer and bone cancer as a result of the contaminated soil in their villages.

The party comprising 14 children and two interpreters were enjoying a one month holiday in the UK, and were guests of the club for a day.

The day started at 9am visiting Paradise Park, complimentary tickets being provided by the Park. The excited kids took the Trail with surprises unfolding at almost every turn, dinosaurs and other prehistoric monsters along with the sounds of the Jurassic age, the tour ending with a train ride through the gardens.

11am - time to visit the Seaford Golf Club where the Club presented a pack of goodies including caps and T?shirts. Then fun on the putting green where the Club Professional Chris Lovis gave some handy hints on the basics of putting. This was the first time the children had seen a golf course let alone play on one.

Just after mid day and the kids were getting hungry so onto a Rotarian?s house for a barbeque where Rotary Club members took the opportunity to meet the children, cook and serve the food. Tasty barbeque food, ice cream and drinks consumed, a farewell from the children in their broken English ?thank you very much? and on to Drusillas Park for a full afternoon visiting the Zoo and the many attractions.

6.30pm, after a very full day of excitement and fun it was time for the coach to return the exhausted but happy children to their host family in the Haywards Heath area.

President John Owen remarked ?what a great day was had by all. The children really captured our hearts. It was so rewarding that we could, in some small way, help these disadvantaged Belarusian children?.
