Charity Golf Day for Friends of Chernobyl's Children.

Few of us are aware that the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster is still affecting the people of Belarus. Although Chernobyl is located in the Ukraine some 20 miles south of the border with Belarus, children who weren?t even born in the 1980s are developing leukaemia, thyroid cancer and bone cancer as a result of the contaminated soil in their villages.

The Rotary Club of Seaford has been working with a dedicated group of people from the Mid Sussex Branch of the registered charity "Friends of Chernobyl?s Children". Their aim is to give the chance for certain children to leave Belarus for a month?s respite in Sussex. They will provide modern healthcare, diet and a supportive family atmosphere to prolong life expectancy for the children affected by the legacy of the disaster.

The club have raised funds through various means including a recent golf day at Seaford Golf Club, raising over ?2,700 to help sponsor the visit of these children. The Rotary Club and the Friends of Chernobyl's Children are grateful to the Captain and members of Seaford Golf Club for their generous support.

During their months stay, the Rotary Club will be giving 14 children a day out at the end of June, visiting Paradise Park, Seaford Golf Club and Drusillas. They will also be entertained at a barbeque giving club members an opportunity to mix and talk with the children.

The club President, John Owen, said ?The basic fact is these children live in toxic wasteland and they need to get away, so we are pleased that we can give pleasure to some of the forgotten child victims of Chernobyl?.
