Rotary Aid for Haiti
No one can have been left unmoved by the shocking pictures on our televisions of the recent earthquake disaster in Haiti.
Whilst it appeared at first that aid was slow in coming, Rotary was at the forefront of the response with the provision of Shelter Boxes.
ShelterBox was the brainchild of Tom Henderson a Royal Navy search and rescue diver and a member of the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in Cornwall. The Club decided to adopt the idea as their Millennium Project and since 2000 ShelterBox, a registered charity, has been sending emergency shelter to all major International disaster areas. The Charity receives much of it's funding from Rotary Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland and the Rotary Club of Seaford has responded with a donation of ?1,000 which will cover the cost of two boxes and provide shelter and basic necessities for up to 20 people. So far over 1,500 boxes have been sent to Haiti and many more are on the way.
Please visit the ShelterBox website at www.shelterbox.org to see more information about the contents of the boxes and also details of the work of the Charity.
Another Charity supported by Rotary is also supplying much needed medical help. Mercy Ships, as the name implies, are floating Hospitals with medical staff and fully equipped facilities, including operating theatres. They are able sail to any disaster area and to operate 'offshore' away from the immediate danger area.
The Rotary Club of Seaford has sent ?500 in support of this very worthwhile cause
Full details of the work of Mercy Ships can be viewed at www.mercyships.org.uk
The donations to the two Emergency Aid Charities from the Rotary Club of Seaford have come from a Legacy Fund set aside for such disasters and do not in any way reduce the Club's ability to serve the local community.
The Rotary Club of Seaford is part of the worldwide organisation "Rotary International" and is fully committed to supporting it's objectives both at home and abroad.
