Annecy School "Boy Racers"
Want a new car? Then build one for yourself!
Well, that's what a group of enthusiastic year 6 students at Annecy Catholic Primary School are doing.
The school is taking part in the Greenpower Goblin Project with the object of constructing an electric powered car and to race it at the East Sussex Goblins event which takes place at Plumpton College on March 20th, 2010.
The Greenpower Goblin is an electric kit car designed specifically to offer primary school pupils a chance to become involved in a simple engineering project involving the use of basic tools and electrical systems. The kit provided comprises a tubular chassis with four wheels, simple steering gear, disc brakes, a motor and two batteries. The pupils have to design and make the bodywork. The standard set up will produce a top speed of 15 mph and there are races organised for unmodified cars.
Once made and run the whole car can be taken to pieces and used again by children from the following year group who will be able to design their own bodywork. Spares are available so the project can be run repeatedly.
The cost of the car kit including delivery is just over ?1,000.00 and the Rotary Club of Seaford is pleased to have contributed ?500 towards the cost. The kit supplied did not include all the relevant tools so the Club has also provided two sets to enable the engineers to perform their tasks more easily.
Several members of the Rotary Club recently visited the school and were delighted to witness the enthusiasm of those taking part.
The photograph shows Rotarians Isla Sitwell and Barry Wells together with Annecy Staff members Maree Rhodes, Mary Meason and four of the budding young mechanics.
