St. John's School Triumph.

St John's School in Firle Roaod was the winner of the Rotary Club of Seaford's annual award at the recent "Safety In Action "week.

Children from 25 primary schools across the Lewes District tested their skills in an emergency at the eveny that took place at Newhaven Fort.

Environmental Health Officers from Lewes District Council and representatives from Sussex Police presented an exciting event aimed at giving 11 year old children basic skills and knowledge to help keep them safe as they begin to explore the wider world.

Councillor David Gray, Chair of Lewes District Council attended the event and was able to see first hand the variety of displays and exercises that were taking place. Of particular interest was ?Sam n Ellas Caf?? ? teaching children about basic food safety. Another display showed children how to behave around and be respectful of dogs.

Every child that attended was given a certificate and a ?goodie bag? full of items that will help to keep them safe.

Thanks to donations from the Rotary Clubs of Lewes and Seaford the winning school, Cradle Hill, was presented with a shield and ?350. Hamsey School as runner up received ?150. There were also prizes for the overall wining team, from Southdown CP school - each team member got a free family entry ticket for a visit to the award winning visitor attraction at Newhaven Fort as well as the ?Jackie Coleman? shield.

Jackie is the retired police officer who started the event in Lewes District and continues to volunteer and attend each year.

The Special School prize was won by St John?s School of Seaford. They received a plaque and ?150.

The event also involved the following organisations: Brighton and Hove Buses, South East Coast Ambulance Service, East Sussex County Council, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Network Rail, EDF Energy, Sussex Safety Camera
