Raid to Shoreham and Southwick Rotary Club

On Thursday 7th June 6 members from our Club visited the Shoreham and Southwick Rotary Club, who hold their meetings at the Sussex Yacht Club in Shoreham. At one point it looked like we would fail to make our expected arrival time as the A27 was blocked after a 4-vehicle accident, but we eventually made it with minutes to spare before the 7:30 pm start.
Val Trevor, their President made us feel very welcome and introduced us to many of their members. Val also explained that she had invited many of the helpers that support the Club for such events as the Christmas Sleigh as a thank you. The local MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, Tim Loughton, was also present.
Before the meeting began we had the opportunity to chat with their members and found out that in the grounds of the Yacht Club stood a small sailing boat that our Club had we helped fund under the Sailability scheme that still had our logo, albeit faded, on its sails. (Shoreham Yacht Club had a boat equipped for disabled sailors which Searchlight used to use. In Tony Osborne's Presidential year Seaford RC funded a sail which was handed over by Tony and Michael Aspel.)
Every club has a unique way of conducting their meetings and it was interesting to experience Shoreham and Southwick’s methods. After a tasty buffet meal, the main “attraction” for the evening was a talk from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, a national Charity comprised of a voluntary network of trained marine mammal medics who respond to call outs from the public, HM Coastguard, Police, RSPCA and SSPCA.
They are the only marine animal rescue organisation operating across England, Wales and Scotland. In a 1 hour 10-minute presentation we learnt about how they rescue and treat all sorts of marine life, including seals, dolphins and whales.
The evening concluded as the sun set with the normal toasts and we set off home after another rewarding visit to a fellow Rotary Club.
