President's weekend on Isle of Wight

THE President was pleased and, yes, a bit relieved to discover that all the 38 members and loved ones who took the ferry to the Isle of Wight for our annual Weekend Away on 25th – 28th May had an enjoyable time at the lovely Brunswick Hotel in Shanklin.
Many were encouraged by their previous experiences on the island during younger days, but I was a little unsure what the reaction would be to staying at a typical old-fashioned seaside hotel (admittedly with excellent, spotless rooms and superb views) rather than our usual Five-star City-break luxury (if sometimes a bit impersonal).
We were especially impressed with the service provided by the lovely staff at the hotel.
We were also blessed with terrific end-of-May weather for most of the stay and Rachael and her staff looked after us superbly well, especially in the dining room area which always presents special challenges with a large group.
Personal favourites were the outings to the Roman Villa at Brading and the Railway Museum at Havenstreet, and the steam ride from Havenstreet, where there was also a fantastic bird of prey display which was put on by the staff at the Haven Falconry, which included a table-hopping vulture that got rather too close for comfort at times.
It was fun to walk into the old town and try and ring the Rotary Bell with coins in their wishing well although we found the Christmas shop a bit twee!
The major gamble was how would everybody take to a Night of Entertainment from comedian/musician David Graham instead of the normal do-it-yourself “panel-game” genre but there was no need to have worried. David’s tunes and sharp (a euphemism for naughty?) wit had them swaying and rocking (with laughter) in the aisles and it was a big feature of the visit.
